Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces involved in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among a great many UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our security, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
