Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
